A NEW MILESTONE FOR THE PODCAST

A few weeks ago – hard to believe – we passed the third anniversary of the free Money Makers weekly investment trust podcast, meaning that we have clocked up more than 160 episodes so far. The audience continues to grow and we regularly now have more than 3000 listeners a week, whichI like to think is pretty impressive for such a specialist subject, given that we have never done any advertising.

The original format, which ran for over two years, involved my sitting down each week with Simon Elliott, head of investment trust research at Winterflood Securities, to talk through all the latest news and data from the investment trust world. Last summer Simon broke it to me that he was leaving his job at Winterfloods to take up a new position as a director of J.P.Morgan’s investment trust business, which made it impossible for him to continue to participate.

Since then I have revamped the podcast to include a wider range of speakers, both professional observers of the investment trust sector (analysts and specialist writers) and fund managers of prominent or interesting trusts. Happily the number of listeners has continued to grow. The podcast is typically recorded on a Friday and invariably published on Saturday afternoons each week. It is available on all leading podcast channels, as well as accessible from the Association of Investment Companies website.

18 months ago I also started the Money Makers Circle, a membership club for interested investors in investment trusts, which includes more data on recent price, NAV and discount movements, a number of specialist Q and As, in-depth trust profiles by my colleague Stuart Watson, and periodic commentary by myself and guest contributors. A subscription costs £2 per week, or £96 a year, and helps to cover the cost of producing the podcast, which remains free.

Three years on, I can only reiterate what a pleasure it has been to indulge my passion for the subject of investment trusts with thousands of other enthusiasts. It is clear that listeners like the format and appreciate that our approach is editorially independent, as it will always remain. If you are interested in investing, why not join us?
